Many people discover a mistake in their income-tax return only after it is filed: a missed interest income, a wrong deduction, or a figure that does not match the AIS. The law lets you correct it by filing a revised return. For financial year 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27), the window is now longer than before, but the free period ends on 31 December 2026.
Revised return dates at a glance

| Revised return, filed from 1 January to 31 March 2027 | 31 March 2027 | ₹1,000 (income up to ₹5 lakh) or ₹5,000 |
| Belated return (original not filed at all) | 31 December 2026 | Late fee of ₹1,000 or ₹5,000 |
| Updated return (ITR-U) | Up to 48 months from the end of the assessment year | Additional tax of 25% to 70% of the tax and interest |
Who should file a revised return
- You missed some income, such as savings or FD interest, a freelance payment, or a capital gain that now shows in your AIS.
- You claimed a deduction or exemption by mistake. A common case is claiming HRA or other allowances when the return was filed under the new regime, where they are not allowed.
- The TDS credit does not match Form 26AS, so your refund or demand is wrong.
- You chose the wrong ITR form or entered the wrong bank account for the refund.
- You forgot a deduction you were entitled to, such as 80C or 80D under the old regime.
Correcting the mistake yourself is far better than waiting for a notice. Once the department raises the issue, the same error can attract a penalty of 50% of the tax for under-reporting, or 200% if it is treated as misreporting.
What a revised return can and cannot do
- It replaces your original return completely, so every schedule must be filled again, not only the corrected figure.
- You can revise more than once within the time limit. The last return filed is the one that counts.
- You can revise even after the return has been processed and an intimation under Section 143(1) has been issued.
- You can revise a belated return too, but only within the same time limit.
- It cannot bring back benefits lost by filing the original return late, such as carrying forward business or capital losses.
How to file a revised return
- Log in to the income-tax e-filing portal and choose File Income Tax Return for assessment year 2026-27.
- Select "Revised return under Section 139(5)" as the filing type.
- Enter the acknowledgement number and date of filing of your original return.
- Correct the figures, check every schedule against your AIS and Form 26AS, and pay any extra tax with interest before you submit.
- Submit and e-verify within 30 days, for example through Aadhaar OTP.
If 31 March 2027 also passes
After the revised return window closes, the only way to add missed income is an updated return (ITR-U). It can be filed up to 48 months from the end of the assessment year, but it costs extra tax of 25% to 70% of the tax and interest depending on how late it is, and it cannot be used to claim a refund or a bigger deduction.
