Frequently asked questions

Yes — under the new regime a resident individual with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no tax thanks to the enhanced ₹60,000 Section 87A rebate. For salaried people the ₹75,000 standard deduction lifts the effective tax-free salary to about ₹12.75 lakh. The rebate does not apply to special-rate income like capital gains.

It depends on your deductions. If you claim substantial 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan interest, the old regime can win. With few deductions the new regime's lower rates usually cost less. This tool computes both and highlights the winner.

When income just crosses a surcharge threshold (₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore and so on), marginal relief ensures the extra tax plus surcharge never exceeds the extra income above that threshold. This calculator applies it automatically.

Very few — the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried individuals and the employer's NPS contribution under 80CCD(2). Most others including 80C, 80D and HRA are not available under the new regime.
